An intraoral scanner is a device used to detect the surface contours of an object and capture them as 3D data. Typically, the object is irradiated with a laser to acquire its three-dimensional structure. This data is then converted into polygonal data, usually composed of a mesh of triangular surfaces. In essence, objects that absorb laser light or have poor reflectivity are more difficult for the scanner to capture accurately.
In recent years, 3D printing has emerged as a highly efficient and cost-effective solution for establishing an in-house dental workflow. Dentists, dental technicians, and assistants can now produce custom-made dental appliances on-site, ranging from orthodontic aligners and implant models to surgical guides and crowns.
